How many driving lessons do I need?
It is the question every learner asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on you.
What the DVSA figures say
DVSA research suggests that learners typically need around 45 hours of professional lessons plus about 22 hours of private practice before they are ready for the test. That is an average. Some people pass with far fewer hours, and plenty take more.
What affects how many lessons you need
- How often you drive. Two lessons a week builds skills faster than one a fortnight, because you forget less between lessons.
- Private practice. If a friend or family member can take you out between lessons, you will usually need fewer paid hours.
- Your starting point. Complete beginners need longer than someone who has driven abroad or had lessons before.
- Confidence. Nerves are normal, and some people need more time to feel settled on the road.
- The roads. Busy junctions and roundabouts take practice for everyone.
How to plan
Start with a short block of lessons and see how you get on. After a few lessons you will have a much better idea. Booking hours in blocks also brings the price per hour down, so it is worth it once you know you are going to carry on.
